This book by Leonard Allen is just great. Allen is a professor of theology in the "Church of Christ" heritage, but here he has written a book that is immensely valuable for believers of all backgrounds. Allen's thesis is basically that the church is to be "cross-shaped," hence the title "Cruciform." Upon this basis, he proceeds to argue the nature and mission of God's people, and how that is to be shaped around the character, nature, and mission of Jesus Christ. He will challenge your hermeneutical foundations, and offer an exciting vision of restructuring our churches to be more in line with the hope of Christ. Be sure to read his related book, "The Worldly Church," in which he seeks to correct the secular corruption of the modern Church.
